Patch 5 problem update

The problem during boot does not seem to be only patch 5. And what I can see is that this start to happen when you add Microsoft KB958644. I have not been able to verify this 100%. But when I add this patch AR System fail to start during boot of windows.

Update: After looking at the event log to see what patches been installed I can not see any thing around when we started see this with patch 5. But patch 4 seem to have stopped working after Microsoft KB958644 was applied. It is the new very important security patch. Maybe this problem is some access right problem.

Patch 5 not only happy days

One thing we noticed with patch 5, looks like a user thing, is that if you have a selection field that is NULL and you make a push in an active link to another selection field, it will not set the other field to NULL but to 0(zero). It is not there in patch 4. BMC has accepted it as a bug, I think.

Another thing is that a AR System 7.1 patch 4 server installed on windows 2003 server had no problem to start on boot-up of windows when TCD-Specific-Port is set. But on an exactly same windows 2003 server system with AR System 7.1 patch 5 it can not bind to the port. It does not matter which one I choose, all ports I tried is over 10000. If you not specify TCD-Specific-Port it just works fine.

AR System 7.1 is still not as stable as you would like. I have not run so many tests on 7.5 yet. So I do not know if it is better, but I hope.

Taskbar Shuffle problem?

I downloaded Taskbar Shuffle 2.5. Main reason why I chose that over some other programs is that it supports Windows 2000. But after running it on an Windows XP machine I could se that Taskbar Shuffle used VERY much memory, 110MB. I wonder how it can be. On my Vista machine I have not seen this behavior at all. Normally stay around 2,5MB. I might have read the numbers in Process Explorer wrong on the XP machine. But I do not think so.

On the Windows XP machine I installed Taskix to see how that works. OK, it does not have all features. But it seems to stay at only using 1MB of memory. More like what I would expect a small utility like this.

xNeat also makes a program to shuffle the taskbar which looks nice. As do their clipboard program. But this is not freeware.

Update(2008-10-11): after monitoring Taskbar Shuffle on my vista machine I get the feeling I look wrong on the XP machine. So I guess I need to have a look again on the XP machine. But the XP machine was using very much memory and TS looked very big.

Update(2008-10-16): now I have been able do try Taskbar Shuffle on XP again. And it directly start using 110MB of memory. And it is REAL memory. I will use Taskix on XP for now.

Patch 5 for AR System 7.1 released

First fix I noticed in the release notes for the server was this about the version number for Java. I have not tried yet to see if it really works. But it is nice if it works.

Another thing we just noticed on a 7.1p4 server was that we get ARWARN 66 on push fields. And that is fixed in patch 5. And it looks like it is working.

Not only the server is patched. user/migrator/mid-tier/email/approval/flashboard are all updated. User include fix for not being able to sort on first column in result list.

Sometimes I wonder how they can have so many bugs in the system. And the reason now for so many fixes is that now people start using 7.1, and then report all the bugs.

Police use teargas

So now the police tries to clear the mob outside the parliament. I am new to Thai politics. But what I here the People Alliance for Democracy(PAD) want to take away the peoples right to vote. And now, to get their will, they occupying the Parliament. OK, the people who in the parliament now is maybe not the most democratic people. But they win the vote of the people. Stop fighting and start planning for the next election. It is OK to show that you do not like the government. But not like this. Gather you information and tell the people. Then win the next election.

Update: look at the pictures down to the left, is it a hand grenade. Who is holding it?

Note: I really would like to be better at Thai language, so I could understand the Thai news.

Rearrange the taskbar

This is one feature I have been waiting for MicroSoft to put into Windows for a long time. I just do not understand why it is not there. Especially now when tabs are so popular and all software use them and can rearrange the tabs. I have not used GUI that much in Linux. But now I have at least one desktop running Gnome 2.22 on Linux. And there it work great with moving the applications on the panel. And it probably have for a long time.

I have not really look for how to write my own program that do this. Or looked hard on the internet if somebody else have done it. But the other day when I read lifehacker I ran into this. It was linked to by some other entry. It mentions a program called Taskbar Shuffle. It looked like an active project so I downloaded and tried. It works fine, both in Windows 2000 and Vista.

I also search little bit on the internet. And found another program named Taskix. I have not tired it. It say it only support Windows XP or later. Taskbar Shuffle can move icons in the system tray, I see nothing about that in Taskix.

Fujitsu UMPCs

Things are moving to fast, and I do not have time writing.

I have been looking little bit more on computers that does not fit into the UMPC standard. And I got stuck with Fujitsu. Lifebook T5010 looks nice. But I guess that an 2kg laptop is to heavy to hold with one hand and writing with the other. And even if it is 13.3" screen it will only produce 1280x800 in resolution. Slightly smaller, 12.1" screen, and lighter is the Lenovo X200t. Same resolution.

I hope they soon can make higher resolution on a 12.1". Minimum of 1080 lines for HD-movies. Not that I would buy this for watch movies. But when travel, especially with the kids, it would be nice to be able to play something of your own choice.

On the upside of these machines to normal UMPCs is longer battery life and faster. And bigger screen is nice if you working longer times at the computer. There are probably tons of other brands that do the same. But the reason why looked extra at the Fujitsu is that I meet people who say that they always work, never any problem. But I guess you can find both ends on all brands.

Little bit funny is this jkkmobile review of a 5.6" screen Fujitsu.

Also, ubuntu mobile seem to be up to speed. Support of new hardware and specially tweaked GUI for small screens. Looks promising. I'm not sure I really would throw away the default on a Fujitsu/Lenovo if I'm going to use it for work. But it would be nice to use something lighter on a smaller device then Windows Vista.
