I am talking about the go tournament Stockholm Open that is being played this weekend. And of curse I could not play. It is mainly because I am in a project that is releasing a new system on Monday morning. Which mean I have been working my butt of this week. And is kind of stand by over the weekend if the other guys screw up. So it did not really feel like a good thing to play.
You can find information about the tournament here. My friend boywing is playing in the tournament. One annoying thing is that even if the knowledge in the Swedish go community about internet is OK, feedback from tournaments and other events is slow. No results from the first day. And I guess that part of the problem in tournaments is that everyone is using this program for running the tournament. It is not very friendly. Someday, maybe before 2050, I will release one of my own. Mobile internet connection should not be a problem to get faster feedback. Maybe I should volonteer for that next time I play. Hopefully not later then Jusandan 2010.

The program used is not the problem.
The problems are:
1) People tend to forget about informing others. I.e. lazy organizers (and participants).
2) Internet availability. People tend to be without it at the location. Strange - but true (at least among the people organizing).
I try to do my part to counter the first problem (1) when I attend tournaments, but even then I sometimes go out and eat/have a beer after the tournament and the results get delayed.
It is a bit unfortunate. On the other hand if one cared enough one would make arrangements to make sure that the partial results were published - or simply be there yourself :)
OK, I guess I give the program to much credit to the problem. But it is not the most user friendly and internet aware program in the world. But why should it be, it is a pairing program not a tournament management program.
And yes, I should contribute and not complain. Sorry for that. This time I am actually annoyed they moved go live to this weekend instead of the intended one. But, what can I do other then charge the money and look happy. :)
These tournaments are about having fun. So maybe it is not so smart to put more pressure on the players to follow more rules about reporting to slow and other tournament managments issues. But at the start of a round the pairing for the round and the results and standing so far should not be so hard to publish.
